  1. Hi Abby,

Your article is brilliant ! I’m convinced it will really help other people.

I’ve never had an eating disorder but did suffer from severe depression for 2 ½ years. It hit me in the middle of a successful career when too many changes hit me at once. I had what someone described as a “paradigm crash”. Several people were trying to help me but I was extremely difficult to help. I had spent most of my career helping other people but was hopeless at helping myself. There was a time I thought it was totally impossible to recover … but miraculously this year, I did. I love windsurfing, skiing, flying and cycling and am really enjoying doing those things this year. Life is good and God is good !

With what you said, I can understand the pain of losing control and not even having the strength or the desire to unhook from the horror. As well as depression, I’ve seen the same in alcoholics (one was one of my best friends) where something evil gets a grip and won’t let go. Finally, for me too it was a strengthening in faith in God that finally got me to full recovery (and in many ways made me a better person). As I learnt to trust God, I slowly learnt to trust other people again. We also have to stop being our own worst enemy and become our own best friend. I found that simply trying to be like Jesus and before doing anything, thinking “what would he do or say ?” is the best way forward. It’s not at all easy but it’s way.

I found your website by accident when I was looking for a poem that I once knew and had forgotten, ending in “….. I bring you the privilege of pain”. Your poems are amazing and I enjoy the ones you gathered from other people. I was so pleased to have found it. I liked the things you said, for example :

Pain is weakness leaving the body

Pain often keeps us from making the same mistake twice or from making the same mistake our friends and family make.

Sometimes it takes pain for us to hear the already God-given permission to rest

    Some other favourites :

    – “Defeat is temporary. Giving up makes it permanent”. (Anon)

    – “If my life is fruitless, it doesn’t matter who praises me, and if my life is fruitful, it doesn’t matter who criticises me” (John Bunyan)

    – “Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true” (Anon)

    – The first step in spiritual growth is to start changing the way you think :

The way you think determines the way you feel,

and the way you feel influences the way you act.

    – “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts” Proverbs 4:23 (TEV)

It sounds like you have a great family and husband and you deserve a great life !

    Kind regards

    David Campbell ( )

    1. OH David, your words blessed me so much today! God knows just when we need encouragement. I think we could identify in a lot of ways (:
Depression is all part and parcel with an eating disorder. But finding Jesus is my only JOY has changed everything.
Thank you too for encouraging my poetry and other prose. It’s funny sometimes to go back and read something I wrote, have forgotten it and learn the same lesson all over again. Merry Christmas!
